Search for the Red Ghost by Sherry Alexander is a coming-of-age story set in Arizona in the 1880’s. Although it has been many years since I was among the target ‘tween audience, I was still glued to the page. Jake is a stubborn thirteen-year-old who wants to be treated as a man. An unknown animal has killed his mother and Jake finds its tracks along with strands of its red hair. When his army scout father is called away due to raids by Apache, Jake sets off alone to find what he calls the Red Ghost. The trail takes him through the desert and a series of deadly incidents along the way involving rattlesnakes, a grizzly bear, a mountain lion, a group of settlers moving through the territory, and bands of Apache. The desert itself is an enemy, and the search for food and water is a constant preoccupation as the days pass. Action abounds. This is a well-written, well-researched book that has the feel of gritty truth to it. A young person, or an older person like me, will learn a great deal about staying alive in the desert and tracking. Jake does many amazing things to survive and some moments are truly frightening. But he never stops being his age. I cannot imagine a young person who would not enjoy this book. I recommend it with five stars.Product details

This was my first time reading anything by Sherry Alexander and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet story. Sherry Alexander has given us a story that will hold your attention from start to finish and will you wanting more from this author. This is a very well written and well well researched by the author to make it feel a touch of gritty truth. It doesn't matter what age you are this story is good for the younger age also, you will fine this story a learning lesson of staying alive in the wilderness and tracking. You read about how Jake survived and some of the his most frightening times in his journey. Search for the red ghost is a coming of age story that is set in Arizona in the 1880's ,even through it been awhile since I been in this target age ,this story had me on the edge of my chair waiting to see what was going to happen next to Jake. Jake was such a stubborn thirteen year old ,who just wants to be treated like a man.But a mystery animal has just killed his mother ,and Jake has find it's tracks and some red hair. But as his father who's a army scout is called to duty,due to an Apache raids ,but Jake all by himself sets out all alone in search of the Red Ghost. Soon his journey takes him through the desert ,and soon he's involved in a incident that has to do with deadly rattlesnakes. ,mountain loin, grizzly bear.and he comes upon a group of settlers that's moving through the territory ,and Apaches . Jake knows that the desert itself is a enemy to all, and his search for food and water is constantly through the days and nights. But as for Jake he will never forget these days,when he was young and the adventure he went on in search of the red ghost.I could goon and tell you more about this story ,but that would spoil it for you. I highly recommend that you read this amazing story ,you won't be disappointed.
Jake Tharsher is just 13 years old when his mother is killed in 1883 by a mysterious beast with red hair and plate-sized tracks. His father, an Army Scout, refuses to hunt the animal down. So when dad is called away again to fight renegade Apaches, Jake decides to risk it all and hunt the Red Ghost through the inhospitable Arizona desert, alone.
Thus begins Sherry Alexander’s exciting historical novel, Search for Red Ghost. Armed only with a knife and rifle, Jake follows the beast’s trail to encounter deadly snakes and wolves, a grizzly bear, and hate-filled Apaches bent on the destruction of all white men that have encroached upon their tribal lands.
Alexander writes descriptively in the third person narrative showing a teen’s determination to find revenge for his lost mother.
Search for Red Ghost is also a young boy’s quest for manhood as Jake survives the trials of the desert to prove his worth in the eyes of his father. It’s a coming of age novel all young men and old can relate to.
