Author Janie DeVos has created a world of blemished beauty in Beneath a Thousand Apple Trees. She has the gift of being able to write beautiful descriptions and dialogue, and she takes you into a world where life's harshness takes a toll, but the diligence and dreams of her characters lift them above their considerable challenges.Rachel is a resourceful girl who met with an accident at the age of four that left her with a limp that forces her to grow up quickly as she overcomes the pain of ridicule. There to help her do so is her Grandmother Willa, a unique healer who is trusted with the secrets of hearts and minds in her mountain community. She is a woman of substance and strength and generosity of spirit that is inspiring to everyone whose life she touches.
As substantive as Grandmother Willa is, Rachel's own mother is just the opposite. A mental darkness grips her, and Rachel and her sister and brother must live with the insecurity of a mother who is not there for them, a mother who likes the "pretty things" in life and whose husband pays the ultimate price in trying to provide them for her.
This book is classically written. As I was reading it, I thought that it was one of those books that could become a lexicon of Blue Ridge Mountain dialect, so perfect is its rendering. Add to that the evident research that went into the history and industry of the area, plus the details of the kind of life that either broke a person's spirit or gave them wings, and you have a book that is not only immensely entertaining, but full of emotion-inducing moments that hold the line on sappy, but rise to the challenge of touching our hearts.
The author excels in keeping our attention and in making us care deeply for her characters. Her writing skills transport the reader to a time and a way of life that is a both heartbreaking and uplifting. I highly recommend Beneath a Thousand Apple Trees!

A wonderful story of endearing love, family tragedy and secrets. I didn't want the story to end. I stayed up many nights later than I should have reading this wonderful story.
Ms DeVos writes in the tradition of John Ehle and Lee Smith, describing what life was like one hundred years ago in the isolation of the Western North Carolina mountain communities. Cash was difficult to come by, as was medical help. People in these communities had to develop many skills just to survive.
This book is, in many ways, a description of those skills and the ingenuity and spirit of the early settlers, their relation to each other and to the land where they lived.
A talented author of several delightful children's books, Ms. DeVos has now ventured into the world of historical fiction and again demonstrates her talent as a "yarn spinner." Set in the mountains of North Carolina, the author takes readers to a time, a hundred years ago, and to a place peopled with characters telling their family history, warts and all. I would call this book "Not to be Missed."
As one who lives in the area Ms. DeVos describes, it was particularly "close to home".
I loved her writing style, and would agree with all who have reviewed it, except the person who
said that they read to escape, so the book was only OK. It was indeed, real and even upsetting,
in places, but it shows how tenacity of spirit and doing the right thing works out in real life.
It is true if you want to escape, read fantasy, but if you want to grow and be reminded of the
tremendous value of integrity, read well-crafted stories like Ms. DeVos's. I am looking
forward to the next installment of the story of Rachel and her family!
I really couldn't put this book down and lost a lot of sleep because of it. I would stay up late reading and say to myself, "It's past 1, you've got to go to bed now. "Oh, just one more page!" -- This happened quite a few nights in row. That's how good "Beneath a Thousand Apple Trees by Janie DeVos was. I truly felt like I was a part of the story and could easily visualize the characters and the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. I highly recommend it!
Beneath a Thousand Apple Trees takes readers into the depths of some of the most troubling aspects of family relationships and secrets while maintaining a tone of triumph and survival that leaves you uplifted despite all the drama. And author Janie Devos gives you plenty, as the spunky wise-beyond-her-years narrator Rachel guides us through decades of struggles of a web of interconnected characters in the Blue Ridge Mountains during the first quarter of the 20th century. It reads, at times, like someone's autobiographical story. The complexities of the younger and older characters are keenly explored, including the spiritual bond of women. It's comforting at the end of the book to know that the saga of the family you've gotten to know so well continues with The Art of Breathing, coming out early next year, as the second installment from this delightful new voice in fiction storytelling.
From Rose Anne Sands - I so enjoyed this novel! Janie Devos is such a gifted storyteller. I didn't want to put the book down once I started reading this three generational family saga. A very entertaining way to escape from the world for a while, spending time in The Blue Ridge Mountains before modern times. I'm looking forward to the next novel in this series.
